Already tried the supermarket stuff?
Most people ring us after the drain cleaner, the plunger and the bent coat hanger have all had a go. That is usually a sign the blockage is further down the line than anything you can reach from the plughole.
Shop-bought drain cleaners are also hard on older pipework, and a lot of North Shore homes still have the original pipes. If the water is still sitting there after a second attempt, stop pouring things down it and give us a call.
What is usually behind it
A kitchen sink that blocks every few months is fat and food waste building up on a rough section of pipe. A shower that drains slowly is hair and soap at the waste or the trap. A basin that gurgles is often a vent problem rather than a blockage.

Done properly
Clearing a blockage is the easy part. The question worth answering is why it blocked. Bad fall on the pipework, a rough joint, roots in a cracked line or a fitting installed wrong will all keep blocking until they are fixed, and we tell you straight which one you have.

Common questions
My sink is draining slowly but is not fully blocked. Can it wait?
It can, but it usually gets worse rather than better. A slow drain means the pipe is already partly restricted, and the narrower it gets the faster the rest builds up. Clearing it early is cheaper than dealing with an overflow later.
Will drain cleaner damage my pipes?
It can, particularly in older homes. Caustic cleaners generate heat and can soften plastic waste pipes, and they rarely reach a blockage further down the line. If one application has not worked, a second one is unlikely to.
Why does the shower back up when the washing machine drains?
Both fixtures share a line and it is partly blocked downstream of the join. That is a main line clear, and we check the gully trap first.
