No hot water? Checks to do before you call

Start outside the water heater. Check the switchboard breaker and the isolating switch, ask whether the power or the hot water load control has been off, and on gas, check the bottle, the controllers and any error code. If the breaker trips again, the pilot won't stay lit or a code returns, stop there and book a plumber.

What temperature should your cylinder be? The 60°C rule and tempering valves

Your hot water cylinder must store water at 60°C or more to control Legionella, and the water reaching your bathroom must be no hotter than 50°C to prevent scalds. A tempering valve beside the cylinder does the second job. Here are the New Zealand rules, how to check your own temperatures, and who adjusts what.

How long do hot water cylinders last, and 5 signs yours is ending

Consumer NZ puts a hot water cylinder's life at around 10 to 15 years, and the only firm number is the tank warranty. What decides where yours lands is the anode, your water, and whether it has been serviced. Here is how to read the signs, and when a repair is still worth doing.

Hot water cylinder leaking from the bottom: what to do now

Water under a hot water cylinder is either running down from a fitting above it or coming out of the tank itself. The first is a repair. The second is a replacement. Close the cold water valve, switch the cylinder off, catch the water, then use this guide to work out which one you have and what happens next.

How to choose a plumber on the North Shore: 6 checks

In New Zealand most plumbing and drainlaying, and all gasfitting, may only be done by someone holding a current licence from the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. The first check takes a minute on the public register. The other five cover who signs the work off, the gas paperwork, the price in writing, the business behind the van, and what the reviews and record show.

Do you have Dux Quest pipes? How to check, and what replacement involves

Dux Quest (printed "Dux Qest" on the pipe) is black or grey plastic water pipe installed in New Zealand homes from the late 1970s until it was withdrawn in about 1987 after widespread bursts. If your home was built or replumbed in that period, five minutes in the hot water cylinder cupboard will usually tell you. Here is how to check, what it means for insurance and resale, and what a full replacement involves.

Gully trap overflowing or smelly: what it means

A gully trap overflows when the drain beyond it is blocked, and it smells when its water seal dries out or debris builds up. If yours is overflowing, stop running water inside and call Watercare first: they'll tell you whether the blockage is in the public sewer or your own drain.

Hot water cylinder overflow pipe dripping: normal or a fault?

A few drips while the cylinder heats is normal: water expands as it warms, and a valve lets the extra out. A constant dribble, a steady flow at night or hot water pouring out is a fault, and each one points to a different cause.

Water leak on your property in Auckland: who pays, and how to claim Watercare's leak allowance

Watercare fixes leaks up to your water meter. Anything after the meter is the owner's to fix, but once it's repaired you can usually claim part of the lost water back as a leak allowance.
