Licensed work, for good reason

Drainlaying is licensed work in New Zealand. Get it wrong and you are dealing with contaminated ground, a failed inspection, or a repair that has to be dug up and done twice.

Our drainlaying is carried out by a licensed drainlayer registered with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. Work is done to the standard, signed off properly, and documented so you have a record for your property file. Buyers and their lawyers ask for it at sale time.

Why North Shore drains fail

Older North Shore homes were plumbed with earthenware or concrete pipe laid in short sections, and every joint is a weak point. Auckland clay swells and shrinks with the seasons, which shifts those joints, and mature trees do the rest. Roots find the smallest crack and grow until the line is closed off.

Add a few decades of ground movement and some enthusiastic landscaping over a shallow line, and you have most of the drainage work on the Shore.

Signs your drainage needs attention

  • Water pooling on the lawn or against the house after rain
  • A damp or musty smell under the house or around a gully trap
  • More than one fixture draining slowly at once
  • Ground that has sunk, cracked or gone soft in a line across the yard
  • Gurgling from the toilet when something else drains
  • Blockages that keep coming back after they have been cleared

Any one of these can be minor. Two or three together usually means the line itself is damaged rather than blocked.

What we repair and install

  • Cracked, collapsed and misaligned wastewater lines
  • Old earthenware or concrete pipe replaced with modern PVC
  • Gully traps that are broken, too low or below ground level
  • Stormwater lines, sumps and downpipe connections
  • Wastewater and stormwater for new builds, extensions, sleepouts and minor dwellings
  • Reconfigured drainage for bathroom, kitchen and laundry renovations
  • Channel and strip drains for driveways, patios and garages

We locate the fault first and open only what needs opening. Ground, paths and lawn are reinstated as far as the surface allows.

Consent and paperwork, handled

New drainage and some alterations need council consent; like-for-like repairs usually do not. We tell you which applies, handle the application and the inspection where one is needed, and hand over the as-built record at the end. That is the document your lawyer will ask for one day.

How the job runs

  1. Tell us what's wrong

Call, or send the form with your suburb and a photo if you have one.

  2. Get a time and a price

We come back with when we can be there and what it will cost. The price is agreed before we start.

  3. A certified tradesman turns up

The person on your job is certified. No apprentices running the show.

  4. Fixed, certified, tidy

Work that needs certification gets it, and the place is left the way we found it.

Common questions

Is the drain on my property mine or the council's?

Generally the pipes on your side of the boundary are yours, and the public network is Watercare's. If we find the fault is on the public side we tell you who to call.

Will you have to dig up my lawn or driveway?

Not always. We locate the fault first and open only what needs opening. Where we do dig, we backfill and reinstate as far as the surface allows.

Do I need consent for drainage work?

New drainage and some alterations do; like-for-like repairs usually do not. We tell you which applies and handle the paperwork where it is needed.
