Plumbing for Devonport's older homes
Devonport has some of the oldest housing on the North Shore. Cottages and villas from the 1870s and early 1900s fill the south of the peninsula, with bungalows, state houses and post-war homes through north Devonport, Narrow Neck, Belmont and Bayswater. The North Shore's first state house was tenanted in Niccol Avenue, Narrow Neck, in 1936.
Older homes are where low-pressure, header-tank hot water still turns up. It is not normally installed in new homes today, so in a villa the question is often whether to repair the old cylinder or replace it. Tree roots are the other regular culprit in established gardens: Watercare says they can spread one and a half times further than the branches above them and easily damage pipes.
Watercare plans to replace the Devonport 2 watermain, an asbestos-cement pipe laid in 1960, with a new pipeline through Narrow Neck, Devonport, Stanley Point and North Head. That is the public network. The pipes on your side of the boundary are generally yours, and that is the part we look after.
